Crystal's love of plants and interest in design began as a hobby twenty years ago while
working on her own home on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. She had always had an
eye for flower arranging and felt happiest while digging in soil. With encouragement from
her friends and family in 1998 she took a landscape technician course at NSCC in Halifax
where she began her career in gardening.
Crystal's first job in the green industry was on a large estate in Chester, NS. During her
time there she had the opportunity to work with landscape architects from England and
the United States as well as local gardeners and growers. Crystal was involved with all
aspects of landscaping including greenhouse production, lawn care, garden installation,
maintenance and container gardening.
From here Crystal moved on to work in some of Nova Scotia's largest production and retail nurseries. Over the next ten years she honed her gardening and growing skills both in the greenhouse and on various residential and commercial properties. Her attributes earned as a greenhouse manager and container specialist include plant propagation, integrated pest management, knowledge of a vast array of plant material and their growing needs, personnel manager, customer service provider, retail sales, and ordering and purchasing plants and supplies. She earned garden design skills from her time spent gardening for various clients both on her own and under the guidance of other garden designers.
Crystal soon learned that her love of helping people with their gardening questions equaled her passion for gardening. This along with her understanding of plants, their placement in the garden and care led her to move out on her own and create a new and exciting business. Secret Gardens by Crystal was launched in January 2011 and is being recognized as a respected garden design and installation company that produces high quality results among its customers and peers.
